With the Napoleonic wars imminent, Holland gave her full support to the French revolutionary armies. Britain thus lost a strategic ally and with it access to the coveted Cape of Good Hope. The only alternative was to seize the colony by force. On the 7th of August 1795 a small yet intrepid fleet of Royal Navy warships bombarded the Dutch garrison at Muizenberg, not far from Cape Town. After very little resistance the Dutch forces retreated and fled to Zandvlei. Fighting continued for five weeks further inland
and finally ended on Wynberg Hill. This wine pays tribute to an important event in South African military history. |
