In the late 1990s, in the Tuscan hills south of Florence, the famed contemporary musician Sting and his wife Trudie Styler began the restoration of a sixteenth-century villa and its gardens, olive groves and vineyards. Careful nurturing of the vines over the last ten years with the help of viticulturist Alan York, who is recognized as one of the world’s pre-eminent biodynamic viticulturists, has yielded extraordinary grapes and the decision to release two wines. Paolo Caciogrna is the winemaker. He consults at Altesino, and Le Fonti, and also has his own winery in Etna, Sicily named N'Anticchia. Paolo makes beautiful, terroir driven wines that favor elegance over blockbuster style. In 2007, Il Palagio began producing organic grapes and have been working biodynamically for the last few years.
