San Felice Chianti Classico 2010

San Felice Chianti Classico 750ML 2010
Sku: 20453

This was one of the best buys from the expansive reviews on Tuscan wines in the latest issue of The Wine Advocate. Established in 1968, the property of San Felice has quite a long history. The land on which Agricola San Felice lies was once a part of a dispute between the bishops of Arezzo and Siena back in 714 AD. In the 19th century, this property was owned by Marchesi del Taja, who was also one of the founding members of the Consorzio del Chianti Classico in 1924. It was acquired by the current owners from the del Taja family in 1968. Located in the commune of Castelnuovo Berardenga just outside of Siena (house favorite Felsina is also from there), San Felice has 140 hectares (about 346 acres) with Sangiovese planted in about 80% of the vineyards. Although the operation has grown to a much more formidable size today with estates in both Montalcino (Campogiovanni) and Maremma (Perolla), the wines have maintained consistent quality and are occasionally exceptional. Now we aren’t going to tell you they can consistently hang with the top guys in the appellation. But they hit a high note with this Chianti Classico from the excellent 2010 vintage, certainly the best we recall from them. The 2010 San Felice Chianti Classico is a blend of 80% Sangiovese with 10% each of Colorino and Pugnitello (the Pugnitello a rather arcane local varietal with a story of its own). The vineyards are located at an elevation between 1,150-1,300 feet above sea level. The wine is fermented in stainless steel and then aged in large Slavonian oak botti for up to one year.

Tasting notes
Aromas of dark cherry, raspberry and sweet violets.Medium-body, with soft round tannins.

 Wine Advocate 92 points
Ripe and smooth, featuring a spine of acidity and tannins that keeps the cherry, tobacco and underbrush flavors focused, with a firm finish and fine length. Best from 2015 through 2022. 30,000 cases made. –BS
A classically styled wine, the 2010 Chianti Classico San Felice is composed of Sangiovese with additions of Colorino and Pugnitello. This second grape once faced extinction and has recently seen a small renaissance thanks to the efforts of San Felice’s winemaking team. The wine is rich with tart plum, rose petal and dried cherry. The palate offers smooth, velvety tannins. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024.
Made with Sangiovese, Pugnitello and Colorino, this beautiful wine has an intensely floral fragrance of violet and iris, with undertones of dried tobacco and forest floor. The palate delivers vibrant wild cherry, white pepper and mint along with firm yet elegant tannins. - Best Buy

Technical notes
Sourced from estate vineyards planted on galestro, a schist based soil common to Tuscany. Fermented on its skins in stainless steel tanks for 8-10 days, the wine aged for 10-12 months in French oak followed by an additional two months of bottle aging.
