Tasting notes
A solid and concentrated wine, with mature fruit, yet vivacious with a structure of harsh tannins.

The 2007 Pinotage ?Superieur? was aged in American oak for 14 months. It initially seems far better controlled than the oak treatment on the Cabernet Superieur reviewed this issue, with a good combination of acidity, some game and power, all with that sweet oak overlay. There is pretty good depth here, and it seems like quite a mouthful, although not always the most charming wine, as the tannins can be a bit hard on the finish, and it is a bit sharp. Add the oak, which increasingly drenches the wine and submerges the fruit as it airs out, and this is a wine with pros and cons. If you like what the oak produces, you?ll love it. If not, you?ll hate it. It does have a chance of integrating its oak better in a couple of years, but its price point coupled with its grape and place of origin may make it a hard sell. Oddly enough, this might have been my sentimental favorite of the group, certainly it is the one I will be most interested in watching develop in the cellar. There were 2,148 bottles produced. Drink now-2018.

Wine maker notes
The Pinotage plots on the vineyards of the Barkan Winery in Tel-Tzafit, located on the western hills of the Judaean Mountains, have proven their potential for growth. The first being the Sidra plot which was strictly monitored during the growth period. Drastically diminishing the crop yield and a strict irrigation regimen, enabled a very high-quality yield from the black Pinotage grapes, which have a highly concentrated taste. A harvest of fully mature grapes, strict fermentation, and extended irrigation, made it possible to fully extract the essence of the grapes. As the wine aged in a collection of new oak casks, after a maturation period of 18 months and regular tastings, the Barkan winemakers choose 18 of the finest oak casks for the final production of the wine. The wine was bottled after minimum drainage and continued the maturation process in the bottles. Barkanís Pinotage Superieur 2008, highly reflects this original grape variety: a solid and concentrated wine, with mature fruit, yet vivacious with a structure of harsh tannins, that enable the wine to fully mature and reach new heights of complexity and rich flavors.
