| Wine maker notes |
| Located on the south side of Mt. Veeder, perched 1,200 feet over the Sonoma Valley, the Monte Rosso Vineyard is one of the most historic and well-known vineyards in the region. Above the fog line, under radiant sunny skies, this mountainside property boasts large diurnal shifts between day and night. The century-old vines are head-pruned and dry farmed, rooting deeply into the volcanic red soil and extracting a rich mineral quality that gives the wine a distinct loamy earthiness alongside its intense, concentrated fruit.
We harvested our grapes from three different blocks within the Monte Rosso Vineyard; which, according to the direction they face, ripen at varying times. To capture the expressive character of each block, we fermented the fruit separately in small, open-top bins, using the native Monte Rosso yeast isolate and Rockpile yeast isolate. For this vintage, we allowed a longer fermentation time of approximately 18 days, which focused the big, red fruit flavors. We then aged the wine for 14 months in a combination of American, French and European oak for depth of spice and added texture. |
