For thoughts on Chateau Ste Michelle’s uniqueness and recent evolution, consult my extensive April, 2013 text designed to introduce recent tasting notes. With 60% Merlot and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon, the thing that most distinguishes Ste Michelle’s 2010 Red Blend Indian Wells from any of their wines labeled “Merlot” is the amount of Syrah - all of 28% - though there are also 3% Grenache, 2% Malbec, and negligible amounts of Cinsault and Mourvedre. Mint chocolate-covered cherry and red raspberry are inform a sappy, slightly rustically-textured palate leading to a bittersweet, herb-tinged finish with a noticeably tannic edge but also a genuine sense of lift. I would plan to enjoy it over the next couple of years.
