d'Arenberg The Love Grass Shiraz (restaurant only in Aust) 1. A Wine That Showcases Chester’s Winemaking Innovation For many years Chester has experimented with varietal blending i.e. Hermit Crab Viognier Marsanne, The Sticks and Stones Tempranillo Grenache Souzao and The Laughing Magpie Shiraz Viognier. The Love Grass represents his greatest example of the ‘art of blending’ to date. While the label does state ‘Shiraz’ small parcels of fruit of other varieties are also included (3% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Merlot, 3% Grenache, 2 % Petit Verdot 2% Tempranillo and 1% Pinot Noir) Chester is very interested in the way different varieties interact in the blend and feels the blend adds complexity and depth to the Shiraz component making it a very interesting drink that continues to evolve in the glass. 2. New Wine- New Label The new label design came about because we wanted to differentiate this wine from others in the range due to the exclusive nature of its release. As it is a restaurant and cellar door only wine we wanted to make it a bit different to make it stand out from the crowd. The name is explained on the back label and the choice of the print pattern around the label resonates with Chester’s flair as a winemaker and his artistic personality. Anyone who knows him well will recognize the correlation between his vibrant and quirky shirts and the design of the label. 3. The Name A wild grass, the Love Grass, often grows in the vineyards surrounding the winery. During vintage, the sticky, Velcro-like, long stemmed flowers of the Love Grass affectionately attach themselves to the vineyard workers’ socks. They even get caught in Coco, the winery dog’s coat and have to be brushed out by chief winemaker, Chester Osborn. This Shiraz will linger with you in much the same way as the sticky flowers do and, as such, the family thought it fitting to name this wine ‘The Love Grass’
