Luciano Sandrone is one of the leading producers in Barolo. His story is well known: after years of work as a cellarman he purchased his first vineyard on the Cannubi hill. Since their first harvest in 1978, Luciano and his brother Luca have devoted tremendous efforts towards cultivating the finest fruit in their vineyards, which now cover 63 acres in the best parts of Langa and Roero, and to taking extraordinary care in the cellar. Sandrone’s Barolos are sometimes described as straddling the modern and traditional styles in the region: elegant, attractive and easy to appreciate right from their first years in bottle, but with no less power and structure than traditional Barolos. Along with the extremely low yields in the vineyard, Sandrone has a very rational approach in the cellar. This approach, however, is also unique and outside of simple classification, as Sandrone subjects his wines to a relatively short maceration period, does not use rotary fermentors, and makes limited use of new oak in the maturation process, all signs of a traditional approach in the cellar. The new winery, built in 1998 at the foot of the steep Cannubi hillside in the heart of the Barolo district, is characterized by the respect for tradition and desire for innovation that also define Sandrone wines. “Luciano Sandrone is one of the leading lights in Piedmont. Tasting notes
Beautiful dusty rose color, with red cherry fruit &floral elements, red cassis, subtle fine licorice and focused minerality. The palate is red stone fruit with notes of rose and cola nut with ripe tannins.

The 2010 Nebbiolo d’Alba Valmaggiore is surprisingly shut down today. The Valmaggiore is often open and accessible when young, but that is far from the case with the 2010. Firm yet well-integrated tannins frame red cherries, sweet herbs, menthol and spices in this surprisingly large-scaled, broad Valmaggiore. Layers of fruit continue to build to the vibrant, layered finish. Readers will have to be patient here. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2022. ”

Technical notes
The grapes are cultivated from the historical cru vineyard in the Roero district – Valmaggiore –situated on an extremely steep slope of very sandy soil at 885 feet. There’s almost no organic matter in the soil and the vines have to grow deep down for nutrients. The average vine age is 25 years. After destemming and light crushing the must is sealed for 24 hours with CO2 for gentle warm maceration. Fermentation lasts 25 days with gentle maceration in upright open-top steel tanks for the first 7- 9 days. Aged 12 months in neutral 500 liter French oak tonneaux followed by 9 months in bottle.
