Musky and sweetly perfumed rose petal and narcissus ally themselves with high-toned distilled-strength pit fruit and herbal essences as well as bacon fat in the strikingly attention-getting and already mouthwatering nose of Meyer-Fonne?s 2011 Gewurztraminer Reserve. The silken-textured palate does not disappoint, its subtle sweetness supporting lychee and nut pastes that mingle with saliva-liberating salinity in a lusciously long finish. This well-proportioned, subtly complex example of its genre clearly outperforms many ostensibly superior wines including in this same collection, offering sensational value and promising to delight through at least 2018. It was picked quite early from diverse parcels, including some with young vines that had already attracted a blush of botrytis. Meyer suggests that this cuvee?s relatively high volatile component has the advantage of helping to balance out the wine?s impression of sweetness. As to why it proves better-balanced and more impressive than most of its single vineyard counterparts, bear in mind that especially where botrytis is involved, luck plays a significant role. Furthermore, we could have here further evidence that under prevailing climatic conditions and trends cooler locations that are still deemed less-good as a matter of tradition are starting to outperform ostensibly top sites.
