The 2009 Grand Reserve Alexander The Great, happily showing some price reduction, was aged for 36 months in French oak. It is mostly a Bordeaux blend, but high in Cab this year: 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Merlot, 7% Petit Verdot and 4% Mourvedre. This is a winery and wine that is rarely shy about oak impact. That said, this is mostly showing well on opening, granting that oak-a-phobes will wish to avoid it. Elegant and surprisingly graceful, beautifully constructed, with fine grip on the finish, this has a very Old World feel to it ? if you can ignore the oak. If I had a quibble it would be hints of that roasted chestnut nuance I?ve been noting in some wines here of late, perhaps stemming from the nature and toast of the oak. In any event, it seems far better controlled here than on the 2007, but it won?t be everyone?s favorite nuance. Frankly, it increased a bit in strength with longer aeration, although it was not particularly noticeable early on, which does make me wonder what happens in 2020, when I might have hoped it would blow off. Approachable now, it should benefit from further aging, but that aspect is a concern. Let?s be conservative at the moment and see how this develops. Drink now-2024.
