The Humbrecht family has made wine in Alsace, France since 1620 but began operating under its current name when Leonard Humbrecht married Genevieve Zind in 1959. The winery is situated in the heart of the Herrenweg Vineyard along the main road between Colmar and Turckheim. The wines are made by Leonard’s son, Olivier Humbrecht, Master of Wine. Olivier is a passionate advocate for wines from this region and the benefits of biodynamic and organic farming. All viticulture and vinification decisions are tailored to the belief that great wines are a reflection of place. The estate was certified organic in 1998 and received its biodynamic certification in 2002. Olivier has customized the biodynamic practices developed by Rudolph Steiner to suit the terroir at the estate. He restricts yields, relies on indigenous yeasts and ferments his wines at low temperatures on their lees in oak barrels for an extended period. Only handharvested estate fruit is used. The wines from this legendary estate are archetypal examples of terroir and varietal and considered amongst some of the best in the world.

Tasting notes
Elegant and subtle notes of stone fruit, honey and sweet sap precede a richly layered palate. This wine will take time to develop, but it’s already showing nice initial roundness in the front palate. The finish presents interesting tannins that hint at the richness and harmony that will come with proper cellaring and age. Indice 2

The Zind-Humbrecht 2011 Pinot Gris Calcaire comes entirely from the Heimbourg ? in effect, a declassification of that cru ? and exhibits comparably modest sweetness from the same level of residual sugar as the corresponding Thann bottling. But this wine?s personality is radically different thanks to more than a degree less alcohol (at 14.4%) and to what I consider a typical instance of active lime in the soil somehow conducive to positive tension and energy even in a wine as richly peachy and outright honeyed as this. Singed pineapple and very ripe musk and Persian melons add to the rich fruitiness of this expansive Pinot Gris, with hints of peach kernel and toasted pecan offering satisfying counterpart in a succulently sustained finish that easily stimulates the next sip. Given how well this shows in the context of its Pinot Gris siblings of the present collection, I?m puzzled that Humbrecht felt it should be declassified. I imagine it being worth following through at least 2025, which roughly coincides with Olivier Humbrecht?s own estimation.

Technical notes
The Pinot Gris was harvested from 26+ year old vines planted in the marly, calcareous soils of the Heimbourg vineyard. The combination of thin top soils and altitude forces the vines to struggle this tends to produce well-structured grapes with elevated pH levels.
