“The Evening Land is an ancient Grecian myth that symbolizes the dream quest for a perfect garden. The philosophy behind exploration and the pursuit of perfection is the foundation of Evening Land Vineyards the winery has accumulated some of the finest Chardonnay and Pinot Noir sites from around the world to produce inimitable expressions of place. In the Americas, Evening Land Vineyards produces estate wines using fruit from iconic properties: Seven Springs Vineyard in the Eola-Amity Hills of Oregon; Occidental Vineyard in California’s Sonoma Coast; and from the far western edges of Santa Barbara County, California, Sta. Rita Hills. Each was strategically planted with a mix of old vine rooted Oregon and California heritage clones, cuttings from esteemed Burgundy vineyards and in Sta. Rita Hills, an experimental block of Pinot Noir that is being grown from seed. The vineyards are farmed organically and together, compose 120 acres. Isabelle Meunier heads up all of Evening Land Vineyards’ American operations. A Quebec native, Isabelle studied viticulture and oenology at Dijon University in Burgundy and earned a postgraduate degree from New Zealand’s Lincoln University. The 65 acre Seven Springs Vineyard is dry-framed using biodynamic practices. The cool ocean breezes, in combination with elevation and soils of volcanic marine sediment, produce fruit that marries elegance with classic acidity. The Occidental Vineyard is a 3.5 acre parcel that is situated near the far reaches of the Sonoma Coast, high above the Petaluma gap near the fog line. The combination of organic farming together with the cool, but sunny climate produces ripe fruit with racy acidity. The hand-picked grapes are vinified using traditional Burgundian methods and techniques: gentle crushing, natural settling, natural fermentation and extended aging sur lie in French oak barrels. Since 2007, Isabelle has collaborated with renowned Burgundian winemaker Dominique Lafon of Domaine des Comtes Lafon to produce wines that highlight the unique flavors and minerality particular to these site.California. The organically farmed, 40 acre block was chosen for its cool climate, long growing season and extreme exposure. Bloom’s Field, Tempest and Memorious are individual block selections additional fruit is sourced from the region’s notable vineyards, namely Sanford & Benedict, Rita’s Crown, Radian, Bent Rock and Sebastiano. The fruit is pressed using a closed pneumatic press, very little pressed wine goes into barrel and primary and secondary fermentations are indigenous. Neutral French oak barrels are used for fermentation and aging and no wine sees more than 25% new oak. The wines age for 12-14 months, are racked once in the winter before bottling and are neither fined nor filtered. In 2009, the Sta. Rita Hills arm of Evening Land Vineyards released its first vintage In Europe, Burgundy is where Evening Land Vineyards finds its heart and inspiration. Winemaker Christophe Vial formerly of Domaine des Comtes Lafon and Domaine de Montille joined the team in 2007. His long-term relationships with highly renowned growers in Burgundy allow him to source superior, distinctive fruit for the domaine. The fruit is handpicked and the wines are made using traditional methods malolactic is allowed and aging occurs in French oak. As of April 2012, Christophe is also managing renovations and operations at Chateau de Bligny, Evening Land Vineyards’s new winery and European headquarters. The wines of Evening Land Vineyards offer an unprecedented perspective on the range of expressions possible with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir and the portfolio is organized to encourage exploration and experimentation. Taking a page from Burgundy, the blue label wines are intended to provide an introduction to the specificities of a particular region. The white labels are “village designate wines.
