Sourced from five geographically disparate sites ? though planted predominantly with mature vines of the traditional Pommard selection ? Hamacher?s 2010 Pinot Noir, leads with a toasty, caramelized, macaroon-like note from barrel, behind which emerge intimations of the cherry and blueberry that then come to the palate with a lightly-cooked character, yet also tart-edged and juicy in vintage-typical fashion. I find the contrast between tartness and torrefied sweetness from toasted oak resin, along with a faintly milky note from lactic acid, a bit disconcerting. That having been noted, there is admirable underlying richness of texture as well as sheer persistence, if in a relatively opaque manner that doesn?t carry with it the primary juiciness found in many of the better 2010 Pinots. I suspect that this will be best enjoyed by 2017. (The 2006-2009 mini-vertical that Hamacher was kind enough to present to me for my issue 202 report didn?t reach back far enough to draw relevant conclusions about bottle potential, and the fact that the 2006 then struck me as unlikely to become more rewarding can ascribed to that vintage?s peculiarities.)
