The 2011 Naoussa is all Xinomavro aged in well-used French oak (70% 250L barrels and 30% in 500L). It was sourced from two sites: Trilofos Vineyard, located in the south of Naoussa (20 year old vines) and Fytia Vineyards, located in the Northern end at a much higher altitude (420m, from vines averaging 40 years of age). It comes in at 14% alcohol. This somewhat unusual wine was described to me as a ?negociant wine.? Space is rented from the Thymiopoulos winery. That?s particularly interesting since when I was first tasting it the first analogy I could think of was the Thymiopoulos Young Vines bottling ? although these vines are not so young and this is far lusher. This is a somewhat tame Xinomavro with concessions to modern style. Purists may call it a guilty pleasure. Others will just call it good wine. It may not age as well as some, but it will show particularly well in its youth ? it is designed to do that. It has a round, ripe feel to it, almost chocolate-y on opening, and that accessible demeanor. Don’t misunderstand, however: the flavor bursts are still classic and typical Xinomavro. It also most certainly still has a backbone and some acidity, even if everything is atypically harmonious for young Xinomavro. In particular, it is not one of those Xinomavros with very modest concentration and no chance of soaking up overly aggressive tannins. The texture is lovely and it shows increasing complexity on the finish as it airs. It also manages to evolve beautifully in the glass, showing more grip, some power and penetration on the finish as it does. It touches the bases and tastes great in its fruit-forward, approachable and sexy style. It should easily win this grape some new fans given its good price point. Purists will undoubtedly prefer wines with more intensity and profundity, but this is just delicious and it is not merely a simpleton. It is worth leaning up a bit. It should be at its best now and over the next few years. Drink now-2023.
