This wine is from United States, California region, Napa County sub-region and Napa Valley appellation. With this Syrah, Shafer honors Winemaker Elias Fernandez, whose relentless pursuit of quality has marked his nearly two decades at Shafer Vineyards. Multi-layered and expansive, Relentless combines the concentrated black cherry and blackberry flavors of Petite Sirah with black pepper spice and an earthiness derived from Syrah, both of which are planted in Shafers hillside vineyard adjacent to the southern border of the Stags Leap District. A deep, dark and delicious wine, Relentless is aged for 25 months in French oak barrels.. There is so much to like in these new and upcoming releases from Shafer. The quality and pedigree of the 2016 vintage is evident in a series of wines that are stellar across the board. I was also very positively surprised by the 2017s. Shafer is among the producers where the 2017s have the potential to outshine the 2015s, which is saying a lot. In short, there is much to admire here. The Hillside Select Cabernet remains the flagship, but frankly I am just as turned on the One Point Five Cabernet and the Merlot-based TD-9, both of which deliver plenty of the Shafer magic at far more accessible prices.- From Napa Valley's Extraordinary 2016 Cabernets - Part 1 (Dec 2018) by Antonio Galloni. Strikingly fresh mountain herbs and blueberries, as well as a cedary and dark-stony edge with earthy nuances, too. The palate has a gently grainy feel with sleek, vibrant berry aromas and delivers a striking mix of berries and chocolate at the long, detailed finish. A blend of 90% syrah and 10% petite sirah. Drink or hold.
The 2016 Relentless is a rich, dense, powerful wine. Thirty-two months in barrel yields a sumptuous Syrah-based wine rich in texture and loaded with personality. Dark red fruit, cedar, tobacco, menthol and dried herbs add complexity to a Syrah-based red built on texture and weight. PETITE SIRAH^SYRAH Wine
