In the cantinas and cabarets of Puebla's Barrio del Artista, passionate discurso is fueled by unique menjurjes - homemade concoctions created from a blend of native ingredients and local spirits. One particularly popular menjurje created by the family Reyes was the only one made from Puebla's signature crop: the beloved anchochile. Ancho Reyes is the original ancho chile liqueur-a smoky, heated celebracion of the radical, the romantico, the independiente inside us all.. As advertised, it opens with the aroma of roasted ancho chilies and an underlying honeyed note. There's more ancho chili on the palate, boosted by cinnamon spice and a hint of dark chocolate. Like a mouthful of mole negra.
Though it's made with ancho chiles, this liqueur is modest on the spice scale. Caramel-y brown in the glass, look for a lightly herbaceous aroma similar to root beer and rounded flavors that mix caramel and cocoa with raisin and cinnamon heat, with a faint smokiness on the finish. Particularly harmonious mixed in cocktails with brown spirits like whiskey.. 40% abv. ColorDeep bronze hue with medium body and high viscosityNoseSlightly pungent, followed by dried chile notes, spices, cinnamon, cocoa, tamarind, and wet wood with lightherbal notes adding to the complexityTastePleasantly sweet, followed by chile with moderate heat and slight acidity. Hints of spices, tamarind, plum, cacao, apple and almonds then subtle notes of fine herbs. A pleasantly lingering pungent taste on the finish. Liquor
