Alium is a 100% Pinot Gris from the Willamette Valley in Oregon, made from 20 year old vines in Antiquum Farm's Little Field, planted in Bellpine soil. The 2023 leans earthy, bending the farm's tropical character toward something herbaceous and savory, with a succulently layered texture. The grapes were hand picked before sunrise on September 29th and destemmed, then fermented with indigenous yeasts in open top vessels with daily punch downs. The wine stayed on its skins for 30 days, then aged 6 months on the lees in neutral French oak. It is 13.8% alcohol.
Antiquum Farm practices what they call Grazing-Based Viticulture, treating the soil as a living system and the foundation of terroir. They use draft horses, grazing livestock and poultry in the vineyard, and much of the work is done by hand. The owner describes making wine cluster by cluster, staying small and working the vineyard personally.
