A decade ago these wines often exhibited more overtly ripe character than I prefer, but then things made a notable shift to better balance and more freshness, a move that seems to have accelerated in recent vintages. The wines are by no means shy, but there's plenty of energy to go with the fruit now, which will also ensure positive evolution in bottle. Winemaker Dean De Korth is a Monterey native and took enology and viticulture degrees at Beaune and Dijon before spending four years working at Olivier Leflaive, Domaine des Comtes Lafon and another three years at Domaine Pierre Morey before returning home. He was hired by Bernardus' own Ben Pon as winemaker beginning with the 2005 vintage, signaling the stylistic turnaround at the winery, which was established in 1989, making it a relative pioneer in the region's fine-winemaking scheme
