Brendan Stater-West Saumur Blanc is a white wine from the Saumur appellation in France's Loire Valley, made from 100% Chenin Blanc. After a light decanting of the lees, the wine ferments with indigenous yeast in older oak barrels and is aged there for 18 months.
Brendan Stater-West came to France about ten years ago to teach English in Paris, then turned to wine. He worked in a Paris wine shop, where tasting Domaine Guiberteau's Brézé 2008 showed him limestone terroir through Chenin. He moved to Saumur and apprenticed with Romain Guiberteau while studying for a BTS Viti-Oeno. He also spent three months at the Clos Cristal, the hospices de Saumur, learning vineyard work with horses. In 2015 Guiberteau offered him one hectare in Les Chapaudaises, a site suited to the style he loves: elegant, pure, vertical, with salinity from the limestone.
