This is a 2023 red wine made from Prünent, a local name for Nebbiolo, from the Valli Ossolane appellation in Piedmont, Italy. The vineyard designation is Vigna Fornace.
Cantine Garrone is a family-owned winery in the Val d'Ossola, a secluded Alpine valley in the far north of Piedmont near the Simplon Pass and the Swiss border. It is the only cooperative winemaking and sales facility for the many mountain growers working the steep slopes there. Prünent is the area's ancient variety, and DNA analysis shows it to be the most ancient Nebbiolo. Its vineyards sit high on the mountainsides and average hundreds of years old. In the 1990s, about 60 local growers joined Garrone to recover and clean up these old vineyards and restart production of this historic wine. That work led Italy to create the Valli Ossolane DOC in 2009, the northernmost appellation in Piedmont.
