Les Varennes du Grand Clos is a 2022 red Chinon from France's Loire Valley, made from Cabernet Franc. It comes from the left bank of the Vienne in Sazilly, just outside Chinon. Within the domaine's range it sits among the cuvées made to be consumed young, and if Chinon allowed premier crus, the producer's own account is that this wine would be one of them.
Charles Joguet left a budding career as a painter and sculptor to run the family domaine in 1957. Rather than sell grapes to negociants, he vinified each vineyard separately, convinced that separate terroirs need separate vinifications. Today Kevin Fontaine oversees the vineyards and cellars, with Charles still living on the property. They farm thirty-six hectares of Cabernet Franc and bottle nine cuvées, each treated as its own terroir and microclimate.
