It all started on a trip to Burgundy in December of 2005. Chef Charlie Palmer and winemaker Clay Mauritson were traveling with some friends to the Hospice du Beaune, one of the most famous wine auctions in the world. The now infamous 2005 vintage had just been put to barrels, and naturally, they were inspired by tasting this "perfection in a glass". Charlie decided that he wanted to make Pinot Noir, and though Charlie owns a beautiful Pinot Noir vineyard, it is less than two acres. It was time to call in some favors. After countless phone calls and pleading their case, they were able to get their hands on fruit from some of the greatest Pinot Noir vineyards in Russian River Valley. Thus, Charlie Clay was born.
