Château Cap de Merle Lussac Saint-Émilion is a red Bordeaux from the 2023 vintage, blended from 70% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. The vines average 25 years old and grow on a plateau in Lussac Saint-Émilion, five miles northeast of the town of Saint-Émilion, in silt and sand over clay with traces of iron oxide. Fermentation uses indigenous yeasts, followed by 18 months in stainless steel tanks. The wine is generous, round and fresh, with dark-berry and black-cherry fruit.
Roland Bel bought Château Cap de Merle in 1966, when the vineyard covered 3 hectares. His sons Alain and Jean-Marie now run the estate, and the vineyards extend over 25 hectares. They farm sustainably, monitoring the vines continuously and encouraging natural predators to control moth larvae, so heavier treatments are not needed.
