This is a 100% Chenin Blanc from Anjou in the Loire Valley. Philippe Germain believes around 13% alcohol suits Chenin Blanc best, and he harvests by hand in several passes (tries) to manage ripeness and alcohol. The wine is vinified for 20 days in 2 to 4 year old 500 and 600 liter casks, then aged on the lees for 4 to 6 months with weekly stirring. There is no malolactic fermentation, and Germain does not use oak for the oak, so he avoids marking the wine with wood flavors. About 2,000 cases were produced.
Château de la Roulerie sits on top of a hill overlooking the Layon valley. Its 22 hectares of south and south-west facing vineyards are laid out as an amphitheatre of terraces, on clay and siliceous soils of schist and phtanite. The château dates to the late 19th century, and the property takes its name from the Chevalier Raoul, who is said to have lived on the site in the 14th century.
