Our cooperative cellar was founded in the wake of a dramatic wine industry crisis in the 1930s. This led winegrowers in the Lugon region to join forces in 1937 to produce and market their own wines. They created a cooperative cellar on the understanding that any profits would be distributed to members. In the beginning, there were 85 members producing 6,282 hectolitres of white wine and 2,481 hectolitres of red wine. Today, 180 winegrowers produce 60,000 hectolitres of red and rose wine in five appellations: Bordeaux, Bordeaux Superieur, Bordeaux Rose, Fronsac and Canon Fronsac. The wines reflect our soil, our climate, and the efforts of skilled and devoted workers. Cooperative members own some 950 hectares of vines in twenty communes stretching from the banks of the Dordogne to the hills overlooking the river. The vineyards of the Union des Producteurs de Lugon feature quite varied terroirs: silty soil near the river, sandy soil to the west, and clay-limestone soil on the plateaux and hillsides. The goal of our cooperative cellar is to bring together men and women who own and cultivate local vineyards to produce a wide range of wines adapted to consumer demands.
