Claque-Pépin Pommeau de Normandie is a fortified apéritif from Normandy, made from about one quarter Calvados and three quarters apple juice and aged for a minimum of fourteen months. At 17% ABV, it is closely related to Pineau des Charentes. The nose shows dates, raisins, roasted walnuts and iodine. The palate is viscous but not syrupy, with poached pear, burned sugar and sweet spice, and a finish that lingers for minutes. It won recognition at the Ultimate Wine Challenge 2018.
Claque-Pépin takes its name from an apple variety whose seeds rattle when ripe. The property sits between the Domfrontais and the Pays d'Auge, on a 17th century farm next to the ancient chateau of Serans, once the Louvet family estate. Owner Benoit Louvet began learning distilling and ageing young with his grandfather Vital, then worked as a cellar master for other Calvados producers before founding Claque-Pépin in 2005.
Serve it as an apéritif, or with melon, blue cheese, chocolate or apple-based desserts.
