This 2020 white is a Muscadet Sèvre-et-Maine from the Loire Valley in France, made from Melon de Bourgogne. It has a subtly floral nose and a textured mouthfeel.
Michel Brégeon farms seven hectares in the Gorges area of Muscadet-Sèvre-et-Maine, on clay, silica, and gabbro soils. Gabbro is an old, blue-green volcanic rock rarely found in vineyards, and all of his vines are planted in it. He started on his own in 1975 after seven years at his family's domaine, and received the rest of his father's vineyard land in 1989. Unlike the region's cooperatives and negociants, he keeps some wines on the lees for as long as seven years in subterranean glass-lined cuves.
