This is a 2020 white wine from Muscadet Sèvre-et-Maine in the Loire Valley, France. It is made from Melon de Bourgogne and comes from Gorges, a corner of the appellation known for gabbro, an old, blue-green volcanic rock.
Michel Brégeon farms seven hectares in clay, silica, and gabbro soils, and all of his vines are planted in gabbro. He worked for his family's domaine for seven years before setting out on his own in 1975, and his father gave him the remaining vineyard land in 1989. He works differently from the region's cooperatives and negociants, who produce in volume. Some of his wines stay on the lees for as long as seven years in subterranean glass-lined cuves. He and his neighbors are seeking recognition for the Gorges cru, called "Gorgeois."
