This 2022 Saint-Véran Maison Rouge Vieilles Vignes Blanc is a Chardonnay from the Saint-Véran appellation in Burgundy, France. It is made from old vines grown on a stony, fast-draining mix of limestone and clay.
Domaine Thomas was created in 1934 and now covers 20 hectares on southwest-facing slopes, mostly in the town of Prissé. The Thomas family has estate-bottled most of their production since 1987. Owner and winemaker Lucien Thomas makes his Saint-Véran from 16 hectares of old Chardonnay vines in a single-block, southwest-facing amphitheater vineyard. He plows, prunes severely, thins clusters and green harvests to control yields, then picks by hand. The grapes enter the winery by gravity, and after gentle pneumatic pressing the juice clarifies in tank at low temperature before fermenting with native yeasts.
