The Francesca Castaldi estate is located in the Colline Novaresi of northern Piedmonte. Colline Novaresi D.O.C. appellation was established in 1994 and includes 25 municipalites. The four most important, or notable of these are Ghemme (DOCG), Fara, Boca, and the Sizzano DOC’s which were all established earlier in 1969. The vineyards of the Colline Novaresi lie between 200- 400 meters above sea level in the foothills of the Alps, and the wines are made predomintley from grapes such as nebbiolo, vespolina, uva rara (local name for bonarda), and barbera. It’s also important to note the Colline Novaresi vineyards were spared the mass influx of chemicals and pesticides in the 1950’s through the 1970’s, so most of the vineyards are, and have always been, organically farmed. Francesca Castaldi grew up surrounded by grapes and wine since her parents on both sides owned vineyards in the Fara DOC. It wasn’t until after a decade + working in the financial world that in 1997 Francesca came back to the vineyards and purchased 4 hectares (about 12 acres) in Briona. She started from scratch by replanting her vineyards using native varietals from her fathers’ clones to produce both Fara and Colline Novarese DOC wines.
