The Gatinois family have been vignerons in Ay since 1696, owning 29 pieces of land which totals seven hectares. The most part – 90% being planted with Pinot Noir on the hillsides with the other 10% being planted with Chardonnay on the chalkier soils lower down at the base of the slopes. A high proportion of the vines are old, ensuring an intensity of flavour from the grapes. Producing around 30,000 bottles per year they sell half of their harvest to neighbours Bollinger. Despite perhaps being best known for their still Ay rouge, they produce interesting, powerful and long living Champagnes, usually requiring further maturation.
