The ninth release in Glenmorangie's Private Edition series was matured fully in American oak barrels that previously contained rye whiskey. A reticent early nose: melon and a hint of lemon, then warm, oily cereal notes and honey develop. Initially fruity on the palate, with ripe banana, then slightly earthy, with nutty spice and cocoa powder. Oat biscuits and spiced rye are generous on the nose. The earthy grain focused flavors are reminscent of cooked barley and cassia bark. Fresh and herbal, hinting at cherry, clove and mint toffee, followed by scents of green grass. A splash of water releases more perfumed notes, both crisp and clean - an inviting complexity of herbal tones.Mimicking rye's burst of spice, tastes of toffee, clove and cinnamon mingle with nutmeg and sweet, buttery vanilla. Rich, sweet and lingering, with toffee and Brazil nut emerging alongside citrus tang.
