Jean Christophe Garnier ( JCG ) is one of a kind. I just love the guy. I would call him Monsieur garnier as the immensity of respect he deserves...but he’s just a great buddy and can’t name him anything else other than JC. Oh, don’t get me wrong, JC hasn’t always made great juices, he is a trooper, in fact. Bon, stop and rewind. Jean Christophe is now an artist but way back he was a sommelier. I can imagine the kind of sommelier he was : out of the path and standards. His 10 years short carrer as sommelier ended at La Pyramide in Vienne, heart of the Rhone. These were the transition years leading from learning to really live the PASSION. JC really open up his eyes and discovered “underground” , should I say Real, Missunderstood, Underated winemakers from this fantastic area. He told me he had totally been blown away , slap in the face, by a few of them. It just happened that these winemakers were Natural Wine Makers if you allow me to categorize them. In a snap of a finger he decided to change from sommelier to Artisan Winemaker...AKA Authentic Vigneron. After a traditional winemaking education in Thouarce (Anjou) he continued on an upper level diploma in Montreuil Bellay in the same area. This diplma included a 6 month stage that he did at Master Mark Angeli. Something did happen in this place. JC alrready had open eyes....which became wide open after his stay at Mark Angeli. After the six month of stage, Mark offered JC as a ” Thank you” a wine press and also found a nice vineyard for sale. Mark not only accompain him winemakingwise but also helped him in the business side. Good start, right? OK, now time for the birdy to fly by himself.
