Clos de l'Hospice is a 2018 Chinon made from Cabernet Franc in the Loire Valley. The grapes were harvested by hand and macerated for a month, with frequent remontages. After malolactic fermentation in cask, no sulfites were added and the young wine was not racked, so it stayed protected under the natural CO2 from malolactic fermentation. The one-hectare Clos is a steep, south-east facing natural amphitheater on limestone, overlooking the Vienne River opposite the Château de Chinon. Nuns once farmed it to fund their hospital, hence the name. Rodolphe Raffault replanted it in 2008 with pre-WWII selection massale Cabernet Franc and has farmed it organically since.
The Raffault family has grown vines in Chinon for 14 generations, since 1693. Today the domaine owns 50 hectares in 7 communes. Jean-Maurice Raffault began vinifying each parcel separately and naming wines after their sites, now common in the appellation. His son Rodolphe has run the domaine since 1997, aging wines in neutral oak in limestone caves.
