In 1980, screenwriter Robert Kamen purchased 280 acres of the southwestern slopes of the Mayacamas Range in Sonoma County. Phil Coturri, a leading organic and biodynamic viticulturalist, was brought into the project to develop and oversee the master plan. Robert and Phil shared the philosophy of preserving the wildness of the place with as little intervention as possible. This led to the commitment to organic farming, a rarity in those days. The result is that the soils at Kamen Estate vineyards have never been exposed to chemical fertilizer, pesticides or herbicides. After a devastating fire destroyed nearly a third of the vines along with Robert's home he began replanting his vineyards. Improved techniques were employed, new selections of Cabernet clones were chosen, and different rootstocks were used. Kamen Estate is located at elevations reaching 1100-1450 feet in the southwestern Mayacamas Range. Thirty six acres of Cabernet Sauvignon and 4 acres of Syrah are biodynamically farmed by Phil Coturri along the contours of hillsides where slopes often exceed 40% grade. Winemaker, Mark Herold received his doctorate in Ecology emphasizing Nutritional Biochemistry from the University of California, Davis. His specialty was applying classic research techniques on select experiments that were designed to improve and forward luxury winemaking. Here Mark looked into the affects of sun exposure, yeast strains and enzymes on wine quality and phenolic profile among other pursuits. Mark's mission is to produce intense, highly extracted, terroir driven wines.
