From being the most widely planted variety in Rioja at the beginning of the 70s and from the 14,000 hectares of Garnacha that were cultivated in Rioja at the beginning of the 80s, to just over 4,000 that have resisted until today. Garnacha's cursed journey was intense and fast, succumbing to the standardization of Tempranillo and its regularity. What remained and remains, very little, is pure varietal resilience: old vines, isolated, hidden in rocky terrain with difficult access, high altitude and difficult to work. But it is a living heritage that, since its inception, Vinedos de La Maldita has tried to rescue by looking for areas where its spirit still lives today and struggles to recover its fullness. Long live the Grenache! Little by little, its cultivation difficulties (low yields) and production led it to give in to the push of Tempranillo (more productive and easier to grow). Many of the vineyards, DAMNED, of Garnacha were uprooted, losing more than 50% of their cultivated area in just a few years. A drama that turned its glory into tragedy. Today, after many years undervalued, it returns full of sense, perhaps to give an account to the past. She is still generous... but she doesn't forget.
