Punta Crena Lumassina Frizzante is a sparkling wine from Liguria in northwest Italy, made entirely from the Lumassina grape. The bubbles come from fermenting in a closed vat, which traps the carbon dioxide and gives a frizzante wine without a second fermentation. Malolactic fermentation generally does not take place, depending on the acidity of the vintage. The wine spends two months on the lees.
Punta Crena is the Ruffino family estate in Varigotti, where the family has made wine for more than 500 years. Their vineyards sit on terraces in the narrow coastal strip between the sea and the Alps, at 350 meters above sea level. Grapes are harvested by hand into small baskets and taken to an old cellar dug into the rock, where they are pressed gently and slowly. Besides Lumassina, they make wines from Pigato, Vermentino, Rossese, Mataossu and Cruvin.
