Scala Cirò Rosso Classico Superiore is a red made from 100% Gaglioppo, a thick-skinned grape native to Southern Italy. It comes from the Franza vineyard in Contrada Franza, in the municipality of Cirò, Calabria. The land has belonged to the same owners since the 17th century and was planted to vines in 1965 after olive and citrus. The 10-year-old vines grow on clay and sand with a south/southeast exposure. The grapes are de-stemmed and macerated at 77F until fermentation finishes, then softly pressed. The wine rests in cement tanks for at least 10 to 12 months. It is 13.5% alcohol.
The Scala family has run the domaine since 1949. Luigi Scala now leads production, favoring quality over quantity, while Francisco Scala handles the business side. They farm 18 hectares, mostly native varieties, and use lupins to fertilize the vineyards. The estate has been certified organic since the 2016 vintage.
