Dr. Heger, located in Ihringen in Baden, Germany, was founded in 1935 by physician Dr. Max Heger. Today it is run by owner and winemaker Joachim Heger. Markus Mleinek is co-winemaker and renowned terroir specialist and soil biologist, Claude Bourgignon, is a consultant. The 49 acre Ihringer Winklerberg Vineyard, located on an extremely steep, south facing slope, is planted on dark volcanic rock interspersed with small pieces of limestone and the seven acre Achkarrer Schlossberg Vineyard is planted on soils comprised of weathered volcanic rock with loess. Estate grown Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris form the majority of the production, but Riesling and Silvaner are also grown. The red grapes go through 18-25 days of fermentation and are matured 12-18 months in barriques. White grapes are fermented in oak barrels. In 2013, Joachim Heger was named Wine Producer of the Year by Gault et Millau and Dr. Heger was awarded Wine Estate of the Year by Eichelmann’s Wine Guide.
